September Seas

South Coast, Jersey C.I.

This is my view returning home on a Friday evening in late September. Conditions were a little rough for a single handed trip and the weather was getting worse, growing wind, a fair swell and the seas getting larger and more ominous the further I went.

I was timing it to reach the west coast during the golden hour as there would be a fair chance this may be my last opportunity for a sunset at sea this year.

This picture was taken at the time I decide to turn back. The sea shown here isn't particularly bad but in 15 minutes I reach a point called Corbiere which is notorious and I can tell from the sea here that it's going to be very rough at Corbiere. If I get there and it's too rough, it can be very dangerous to try to turn around, especially single handed so I decide to turn back here and try again the following morning. As a bonus, I ended up capturing the 'Onlooker' shot later that evening for the single light source challenge.

Naj, I see. Perhaps it is the combination of the 'microwaves', increased contrast, downsizing, slight sharpening and jpeg-compression? Anyway, I tried softening the waves a bit by selecting the water (easy enough - just a rectangular marquee) and applying 0.3 px gaussian blur - looked better (more natural) to my eye, ymmv. I also tried decreasing the contrast in the water (opposite S-curve in curves) to get a sense of what it looked like before you increased the contrast. I kind of liked that better as well - more of the sky-color became apparent in the waves, which also helped in making it look more natural. So perhaps what it boils down to is a difference in personal taste and preferences? The increased contrast in the sea does yield a striking color contrast between the sky and sea, I'll give ya that!

PS. great capture of the gull!

Thanks for the nice comments.

Olaf, regarding the over-sharpening. I know exactly the effect you are referring to, it has had me a little confused since I took this photo. This was taken with my EFS 60mm USM which delivers very sharp results. There is a little sharpening but it is only mild and was for the benefit of the silhouettes to the right. The sea pretty much looks likes that (in terms of sharpness) on the original except that I upped the contrast to try to convey how harsh it actually looks out there.

My best explanation (guess) is that when the seas get like this they are covered in very tiny ripples which interfere and amplify resulting in larger and larger interference but the small ripples are still there on the surface of the larger ripples. I think what is being seen here is these small ripples catching the light. The effect is also probably exaggerated a little by the JPEG compression.

I you look carefully you can see an example of this effect just starting to happen on this image:

I'm not too concerned however, because it looks nice and dramatic at larger sizes.

I don't think that this is over sharpened at all...but the image is much better than the thumbnail lets on. I like this bunches and bunches...Best Wishes, Traveller

Very nice Naj! It does look a bit over-sharpened to me, though, especially the water.
