Mount Shasta California

Alpenglow lights the peak

Yes, I made my husband haul a heavy generator up
there in subzero temps :)

I'm working on this image and one other right now
to produce a Christmas card, so feedback would be
timely.

Thank you Bob - yes this moutain does resemble fuji from some angles - particularly the north. This was taken from the southwest - the angle from the north has little topography at the base with a lower base - so it is quite dramatic. Cindy

Spectacular Cindy, certainly a challenge for the DSLR. Looks like the classic Mt Fuji. ~ Regards Bob

Thanks guys - yeah Phil, I do have a massive asset there no doubt. But it isn't always easy to shoot - talk about extreme dynamic range - this shot is a perfect example of a night shot at one end and extreme brightness at the other!

Regarding the useful hubby :) He is VERY helpful. What I was really after with this scene is the foreground trees covered with snow too - that would have been just awesome. But everytime we had a fresh storm, either the moutain stayed hidden in the clouds until the trees dumped . . . or the road was too covered in snow for the rotary plows to get it cleared before they dumped. And that generator was just too heavy to ski in. I did make it up there one time in just the conditions I wanted, but he was away on business and there was just no way I could manage that generator by myself.

I wonder if Christmas lights could be run off an extension cord somehow hooked up to the car cigarette lighter with some sort of converter??? Anybody know? that way I wouldn't need the generator . . . or if any strong backs want to come up and help me with that generator this winter I'll trade some photo-guide service :)

Thanks again, Cindy

...and husband-wise, Phil! (would your wife haul anything anywhere at any temperature «just to take a picture»?) ;-)) — db.

I think Cindy has an unfair advantage over the rest of us scenery-wise.
Beautiful, just beautiful.

Hi Melanie - Yes - that is alpenglow, a common phenomenon on this mountain. The peak is 11,000 feet higher than the valley - and the sun sets behind 10,000 foot mountains to the west - so the valley is in darkness long before the peak - which is reflecting the colors of the sunset. Cindy

Beautiful Cindy! Is that reflected sunlight on the mountaintop? --Melanie
