I set a goal for myself this afternoon to do a straight forward self-portrait. I will state for the record that while I tried to push all vanity aside that this is the singularly most difficult project I've ever undertaken. I won't do this again lightly...I know my place is behind the lens, not in front of it.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
1/125s f/5.6 at 50.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Hello Mr. Puff! Nice to meet you! Finally. This is great work. You are as good as infront of the camera as you are behind it. -Cat

I know just what you mean, Michael. I find self-portraits to be difficult as well. First, there's the subject matter. :) Plus the lack of immediate feedback during composition, focusing, etc. Definitely a challenge, which you've met successfully here. Well done. -The Doctah

The lighting and processing of this picture are superb. I have to admit passing it over a few times as a thumbnail, but viewing it in the original size, it's stunning. -- Victor

Well done Mr. Puff. The hat is a nice touch. The lighting is lovely. - CameraShy09

Very nice straight forward protrait, Michael. It's good to see your pic (a classic) that isn't totally PS'ed with three of you or your head in your lap, or the like. I know just what you mean about SPs, I'm having much the same problem making myself the subject of my own attention. Warm fuzzies, -mikey

Michael, for some reason this image/face reminds/resembles of Neil Young...might be the hat. Love the lighting. - RK

Well........... it's good to put a face to the name, even if you found it hard work, Michael.
I like the photo, which has the usual Michael P finesse.
Regards
Michael

Your B&W's are always spot on.....this is no exception! The pose is superb showing us a seriousness that is reflected in many of your images. In this SP, you have captured the very essence of Michael Puff and the lighting is such that one focuses on your right eye holding one captive. Wonderful image! shu

....ps I just showed my man-friend Ed this pic and he commented "He's wearing a white hat, which tells me he's a good guy." What do you make of that, Michael? LOL

I really treasure thisopportunity to get a better insight into what our fellow-photographers look like - when they are in front of the lens! Thanks, Michael, for a most professional self-portrait. (And I can totally relate to your comments.) Regards ~jnconradie

You keep doing this to me... this isn't the first time I've gotten thrown by your pic. For some stupid reason, I have it in my head that you are thirtyish, dark-haired, and quite possibly Asian! LOL! Ok, I won't be fooled again! LOL!

Nice shot, but the hand is too prominant. I think it needs to be burned down a bit - b/c it is less important than the face, it should be slightly darker than the face. I guess, technically, the same should go for the hat - it is nice, very nicely shot, but a bit distracting to the face. Nice that you got the catchlight in the dark eye. :) ~ Lonnit

This is a wonderful SP Michael! While you look thoughtful, I also see a glint in your eyes, a look of amusement perhaps, which conveys your sense of humor. Wonderful lighting too. CJ

I know exactly how you feel Michael, but this is a great portrait, very expressive, beautiful lighting. I disagree with this "I know my place is behind the lens, not in front of it. " because you are very 'photogenic' . Well done Regards ~ Melbob (BOB)
