Not to worry :)

No fingers were harmed in the making of this shot.

Here's the knife I used:

I just ground out the openings using a die grinder and a "moto-tool". Crude, but effective.

Lonnit: Your reaction is just what I was hoping for. The idea was to have a bit of fun with resepect to the discussion that had been going on in the challenge thread. It's kind of gross, but in the end, I was hoping it'd give folks a chuckle or two :) Jim H.

Jim H! Does this mean you won't be doing any more photography, or is the trigger finger on the right hand? LOL Very neat, indeed!!! shu

The horror fan in me can't help but like this photograph. I appreciate the effort too, to create such a ghastly image.

After I choked the vomit back down, I laughed out loud! This is GREAT! VERY well done and pretty decently convincing. I cannot believe you actually carved the knife. Excellent dedication to the challenge. You do realize there is no monetary prize here, don't you? LOL! ~ Lonnit

Well, if you want a really realistic picture, I imagine there would be not much blood at all. That usually comes later. I realize you're cutting arteries, which are under pressure, here, but the knife is sealing them off, mostly.

So what aspect of the operation attracted the cat? Surely not the shampoo. Oh, I just thought of something. If you could roll your pinky sideways a bit, it might look like it's mostly detached. And in another burst of inspiration, how about tying a tourniquette (is that how you spell it?) around your arm (out of sight) just to discolor your hand a bit. I don't know if that would help or not.

By the way, I like the picture.

Hi Victor.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Starting with milk or cream would give me an opaque base. I've seen recipes that used zinc oxide just like paint base would use. But I'd rather have it be simple and use easier to get ingredients.

Then, what I had in mind if I had an assistant to help was to put the "blood" in a sqeeze bottle and put the knife in place. Then I'd have the assistant run a line of the blood along the back side of the blade. Then, I'd raise the blade up just a bit and then push it down again so that just a bit of it would seep under the areas of contact.

I think that would result in a more realistic look.

Just pressing the knife against bare fingers looks amazingly scary and real. So it's a matter of getting the right amount of blood in the right places. And I would need help to do that.

What I used in this shot was clear hair shampoo with red and blue liquid food coloring added. I tried putting a bit of cornstarch into it to give it some opacity, but that looked pretty bad.

Milk might be very good. And perhaps a different style of pigment. I've read that powdered poster paint is good along with a bit of instant coffee :) It's surprising how many hits you get when you do a search for ( "stage blood" and recipe ). I guess people have put a lot of thought into this :)

I need to show this to my son. He's a paramedic and has seen more than his share of real-life injuries and meyhem. He would be a good person to have on hand while mixing and testing fake blood. Jim H.

For the blood, I have a suggestion. First, mix what you have with milk. That will give it the same kind of opacity that blood has, and for the same reason -- small suspended particles. To get the right amount of blood next to the "wound" I'd experiment with placing the blood on the nonvisible side of the knife. That way, the only thing visible would be what comes between the knife and the fingers. That would approximate what it would look like with some blood oozing out, I think.

Jim, I am in awe of all the time and trouble invested in creating this. But I just cannot bear to look at it... my stomach turns and an intense shiver runs down my spine. You should apply to become special effects director at one of these gruesome horror movies. :-) As CJ said: "This is sooooo gross!!!" :-) Regards ~jnconradie

This is sooooo gross!!! Very creative Jim but maybe you should title this "Oops!" I can't really say I like the image but I sure like the creativity shown and the effort you went through to get it! :-) CJ

WOW, very striking... looks extremely real Jim as does the blood. Am sure you will get very varied comments on this one. I for one, absolutely LOVE it.

Cheers, Vikas.

Thanks.

I bought a cheap kitchen knife and spent about an hour with a moto-tool and a die grinder cutting out the finger openings. I'll post a picture of the knife at some point. The hard part here was setting this up quickly and then firing the remote release with my teeth. And that darn cat just wouldn't stay off of the table - but I couldn't shoo her away once I had the blood in place.

I'd have cloned her fuzzy butt out of the corner, but I thought that would be outside of the rules :) I also was not really happy with my fake blood either. I may try doing this again better if I get some time. I wanted less blood, actually, because the knife thing looks really convincing when you see it right up against the fingers. But the stuff was too runny and transparent so I had to load it on and shoot quick.

I need a couple of assistants to do this right. One to herd the cats away and one to apply the blood for me :)

I hope this isn't too sickening for the group. I got this idea as soon as I saw posts questioning whether or not fingers on a hand counted. Halloween is coming up, I guess. Jim H.

Jim, that REALLY is terrible! I had a start for a moment thinking it was real (ish).
