On the road out of Rio de Janeiro one quickly enters mountains and what is known as the Atlantic Rain Forest. I was on my way inland to the UN Historical Site of Oro Preto, but first came Petropolis, and then Teresoplis, the Summer home of the Portguese Queen Empress Teresina. There is nothing on this road except steaming when hot, foggy when cold, rain forest. I suppose that at one time there was a road through the mountain pass here...but the hill behind rises steeply and the fall off into the valley far below is sharp and vertiginous.
There are no other fortifications or even room to build any...but this single wall with its faithful cannon stand sentinel still...guarding the way to somewhere. (Thanks for asking...I love having the excuse to write). Best Wishes, Traveller
