Bogdan, this is excellent that we usually have such opposing opinions! Eliminates the boredom. :) ~ Lonnit

I liked a lot better without the grain as it looked a bit ridiculous and contrived but in a good way, sort of Dali meets Chirico at Hieronymus Bosch for drinks. Now the grain ads a documentarian "gloss" over everything but this composite is obviously not about Vietnam (or better said "newsworthy"). The sharp look of paint peeling on the wall was especially apealing (little pun intended) and it was accenting the dismembered limbs in a meaningful way, making them stick out from the composition. That effect is also gone now.
I'm sorry... Just my two cents.
Bogdan

New version uploaded. Olaf, thanks for the link. After experimenting with a number of things, I ended up adding grain on a duplicate layer and masking it out from the parts of the image where it had little effect or lowered background contrast. I tried to keep it subtle and just applied grain where it added texture to areas which were flat compared to the background texture. Personally, I think it adds a unifying texture to the entire image. Lonnit, I'm just delighted you made the suggestion as I think the piece is much more visually cohesive now. Thanks! -Michael

Regarding grain, Lonnit and I had some communication about making it look more like film grain in the comments to this shot by Andy Williams:http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/38864471

I don't do it often; it's not something that a lot of images need, so I've not yet deemed any method a favorite. Sorry I can't be of more help. ~ Lonnit

Grain is an interesting idea, Lonnit. I've never really experimented with adding grain. Do you have a favorite technique? -Michael

Looks like a movie frame. Maybe a bit of grain would add to the grittiness of the situation? This is a cool obsession you've developed for tossing in limbs. Keep it up! ~ Lonnit
