Very strong composition, wonderful colors and the shallow DOF is just right.

Andres, awesome composition, the shallow DOF fits the shot perfectly, well done! See you around...

Well, so are you Andres, (a really good photographer). This is just my own little strangeness, as I tried to expain, but maybe not very well, below. This is an excellent and thoughtful image. If you see Hernan, send him our best. Traveller

Wow, thanx guys for all your input, its really helpful to read about your thoughts on the pictures. And also very interesting to see how your opinions are so different but both have a good explanation for it.
I'm more of a shallow DOF guy, but I always think a lot about it in this kind of pictures. I took this image as it is, then I walked a few steps and returned to take it again with more DOF to see the difference at home. I liked this one way better than the other one, but it's always a personal desition. Let me know if you want to see the other one, email me or something :)

Thanx again

Ah just don't like 'em dogs, that's all! I be a cat person...lol. No seriously, at first I though that this was a presentation problem in that when I click the image I only see the top half and that's all VERY shallow DOF. It is not till I scroll down that I see what the image is about.

But then I thought that this is maybe a philosophical problem, with me always wanting more data, more information in all images...and that was why I had an objection to the picture. And I do object, there is a lot of iteresting background...Where is it, where is this place, where is the SENSE of place? (Something I've written about before as a photographic goal, independent of any real need to know the actual location...but you should get a sense, nonetheless, of what the place is about).

But then I realized that I had a more substantial problem with this image...there's a hell of a lot of shallow DOF and very little In Focus. So, in the final analysis, while I can like shallow DOF, it is the ratio of Shallow to Sharp that I object to.

I know that this is a heck of a welcome to the Challenges Andres, but you will come to find that all these comments are meant in the best way possible...and besides, you don't have to agree at all. Best Wishes, Traveller

Traveller, your comment is interesting to me because the extremely shallow DOF is one of elements which most attracts me to this image. The forground and pup are in sharp focus and draws my eye instantly. The background is fairly complex and has tons of interesting shapes and lines. To my mind, the background being so soft allows all of its strong elements to play a secondary role and works in nicely with the high-key treatment of the overall image. So that's what I like about the shallow depth of field, what are you looking for with greater DOF? -Michael

A second nit, I like the picture but think it would have been much better with a greater DOF. Believe me, I know a picture is what it is...but still, I thought I'd note this. Best Wishes, Traveller

So many wonderful elements in this image. A nice high-key feel, all those horizontal lines across a vertical composition, the strong angle in the background barely there but ever so present. The dog beautifully placed. Did I mention that I like it :-)

One nit, I understand that some photographers feel the need for a watermark and I'm OK with that. However, I'd like to see it much smaller where it doesn't compete to be an integral part of the composition. -Michael
