5th Place
The Daily Grind
by Michael Kilpatrick

It occurred to me that perhaps I should explain prior to voting that this is a composite image.
The sparks were made using the angle-grinder in the picture but I couldn't get a satisfactory exposure of both the sparks and the angle-grinder in the one shot.
So........ I took quite a few with a short exposure to get the sparks without over-exposing, then took several more at a longer exposure to show the angle-grinder (the sparks were blown out in those), then combined the best of each into this image.
Both the shot of the sparks and of the angle grinder were taken during the challenge period. The EXIF data being displayed is for the shot of the sparks.

Canon EOS 20D
1/60s f/13.0 at 120.0mm iso800 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

I actually feel stronger about this now that I know the work that went into it. Voting si going to be very difficult this Challenge. Best Wishes, Traveller

This is really neat. I love the way you got the ring of heated particles forming the circle around the grinding wheel. It sometimes looks just like that in real life but I can see how you'd have to work at it to get that in balance with the sparks. And by using the fast shutter for the sparks, you've made them distinct and not just a big orange blur. I also really think that the sparks bouncing back upward and to the right cap off the composition perfectly. Well done!

Well thought out and well executed. Excellent composition. Even the rebounding sparks are on the diagonal. ~Harvey

When I first read the title, I thought you were referring to a coffee grinder! I like the composition. The diagonal line of the sparks leads the eye to the grinder. Nice lighting too! :-) CJ

I am constantly amazed by the imaginative entries in these challenges. Since I have access to both a grindstone and a dark garage, I look at this and say "Doh!, Why didn't I think of that?" But it never would have crossed my mind. Congratulations on the thought and the nice execution. Is the rim lit by friction, too, or is there an outside source of light? Nice work.
