Beyond Blue *

They actually refer to this color of LED as "super purple". I'm not sure I was able to capture the real look of the light this thing produces. It's far enough into the UV range to cause fluorescence in some materials.

Jim, I think you may be running into the same problem I was having with my minimalist entryhttp://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/52641175 . My solution to producing a color which may not even be possible to produce on a monitor was to create a gradient. You sort of have a gradient here, but it looks more like one color with highlights of another color. It works, though, and I think your multi-color border helps to reinforce this.

I tried making adjustments several different ways but couldn't improve on what you had here.

I also note that the hue is related to the lightness. Our vision is sensitive to low levels of blue light, especially in peripheral vision, giving a sort of glow effect. Since the retina has fewer blue cones, circuitry takes the blue and mixes it in with whatever other color is present. This is why taillights with blue crystals put in them look magenta from a distance.

To Lonnit: In this case, I'm not sure your distinction between blue and purple is needed. The way I see it, the colors are distinct here only in order to create the illusion of a uniform color that is perceived differently depending upon intensity. Whether it's beyond blue or beyond purple doesn't really matter so much. It's beyond the colors that can be produced on the monitor. It's sort of like using duotones to print a black and white image. You still have a black and white image. The toning just gives it more depth. -- Victor

Really cool shot. Yeah blue is the dominant color but I really like the extra hint of purple.

Well, OK. I renamed the image :) It does look more blue than purple, but I prefer it looking that way so I didn't want to change the photo. I played with the color temperature on this across the entire range of possibilities and nothing I could do made the photo look exactly like what I see with my eyes when looking at this thing. I think the violet areas in this version come the closest to looking like what I see in "real life". But none of that matters. In the end, I don't really care what the scene looked like. It's the final print that is important. Jim H.

Errrr, ummmm.... little tad of a problem. It's not the purple that dominates, it's the blue. Yes, you do glance to the purple but the rays send you flying right back to the blue. If you're going to call it Purple, it's off topic, but if you'll call it blue, it's on topic. :) ~ Lonnit
