Quilt of Wood *

This was a Christmas gift I made for my mother. She has loved to quilt over the years, but is now no longer able. She hung this quilt in her study where she can view it often.

Amazing work, Jeannie, both the woodwork and photo. (*) I'm thinking that if you did a wee bit of judicious burning at the corners with a big soft brush that the image might have a bit more depth...just an idea. -Michael

Whoa. That's breathtaking. You made this.. I'm in awe. A lovely gift that I'm sure brought great joy. All of those delicate shades of rich browns... Very very nice.

Oh, I bet it's heavy! You didn't give yourself much time to do it. I certainly know what it's like getting anything done with three kids. LOL! Painting it would not have been nearly as nice. You'd lose all the natural beauty of the wood. I think the clear was an excellent choice. You had to cut every piece? GAK!!! You're crazy! LOL! Sounds like it was a wonderful surprise for her; a nice payoff for you after all that work. :)

I'm still on the fence on this one - the browns do hit you strongly, but so do the patterns. I think because brown is such a neutral color, it doesn't scream at you like rainbow colors do. If this was shades of hot pink, there'd be no doubt it was slap-bang on topic - but then I would be nauseaus! LOL! ;)

No matter what, it was still a nice getting-to-know-you-better moment. :) ~ Lonnit

Jeannie, this is really beautiful....the woodwork and the photo. Such a huge amount of work in it!
And I think it's on topic.

Lonnit - The overall dimensions are around 30 inches by 30 inches. It's around 3/4 inch thick. Definitely required some nails in studs to hang!!

I started working on it in October & finished it just the week before we left for Christmas. I was starting to get a little worried about whether it was going to get done on time. ;) All in all, it probably took around 110 to 120 hours to complete. With 3 young kiddos, I just wasn't able to work on it for any length of time. As those with young ones know, everything takes a lot longer to finish!!

I did work from a pattern, but as usual I deviated from it a bit. LOL :) The pattern called for painting or staining the wood. I did neither -- just a clear varnish to protect the wood. There are 6 different woods used: western red cedar, walnut, poplar, pine, sugar maple, & mahogany. Each piece was individually cut with a scroll saw. Attention was given to the wood grain to add to the pattern. Then each piece was sanded on a belt sander & finished by hand. Three coats of clear varish & glue the whole thing together.

My Mother loved it!! She was really surprised because she had no idea that I had even started up woodworking again. I don't believe I've done any woodworking since my youngest (now 2) was born. I talk to my Mother frequently on the phone & never mentioned anything about it. Yes, that was a big accomplishment in itself. My Dad also kept the secret. he he he I didn't think we'd pull it off. We were both so excited to see her reaction!!

OK, you asked a lot of questions & I wrote a lot of answers... LOL But back to photography... Even though there are variations in the wood colors, I felt the overall tone was brown. Yes, there are a lot of patterns & textures, but I didn't think that took away from the color. I hope I get more feedback letting me know if people think this is on theme or not.

Well, I hope I haven't hit a max limit on a comment. :) But you did get me talking about my "other" hobby... -- Jeannie (jburly)

I'm not sure about dominant color; I think this is texture, not color, but I am sure that it's beautiful. How large is the finished piece? How long did it take you to make? Is it a kit? Did you have to stain/cut the pieces yourself? Looks like a lot of work. How did she like it? Am I asking enough questions? LOL! ~ Lonnit
