Pops was lucky to get that great breach series while he was in Hawaii. We saw only one breach on our trip. We also so this guy. He (or she) was tail slapping. He kept diving head first and then slapping his tail back and forth. We saw him from a distance and approached just as he completed his last slaps. When humpbacks do this there is quite a sound along with this great sight. Arvin and I just loved seeing so many whales. They often surrounded our boat and swam right under us. Some were so close I couldn't get their pictures with my 100-400 lens. Ahhhh. ;-)
