The Obelisk

"The Hill" newcastle

Ok so you say the sky is too much for this challenge,a matter of opinion.
I could have constructed this at home on the dining room table with a white napkin.......bloody boring I say, instead I chose to go out for the day find something simple and set about taking a shot in a way that none of the trees ,bushes and other distracting elements stood in the way.
By getting low to the ground and looking up the mound, those elements disappeared and the Obilisk stood out there in the corner,on it's own ,pointing to the sky,to be minimilistic it is not essential to strip everything back to lack lustre plainnest but to reduce it to a point that is still pleasant to the eye, easy to look at and obvious to the viewer as to what they are seeing.
Graphics and shapes on a board is the art form, but being the photographic form is a little different...........it needs to be more than just a piece of lifeless cardboard with a few colours.
just my opinion.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
iso 200 f/11 shutter 1/400th/sec full exif

I was thinking about monochrome Phil,I even tried an experiment by filling the background with just blue but the picture just fell away to nothing.
The monchrome though has some merit and I was tempted to use it on my chair photo but I just loved the pretty colours :)

Eric
I keep coming back to this image - I love it more and more each time I see it.
There's a lot of debate on this challenge and while I see *exactly* the point you are making, I think this imagecan be made to fit even better.
Hope you don't mind, I took it, desaturated it and really screwed with the levels etc, and posted it here:

(I'll remove it if you want).

Thanks David,I shouldn't say to much and learn to keep my comments to a minimum!

Great sky! In fact that sky is *too* good for this challenge, I think - such a shame it wasn't a perfect cloudless day as I think this would have worked so well - strong lines, simple colour.
