Snow Angel in Progress*

Meet Johanna. She is our Venezuelan Exchange student.
Today was her first experience with a snow storm.
She celebrated by making her first snow angel. :)

Thanks for all the help on this one!

Thanks John. Well, I wasn't going for an urban affect so that tells me something. I also like the other versions and will have to make a decision here soon. Thanks for looking. Cindy

Hi Cindy. Each version has its own appeal. For me, the shot as originally posted has more of a gritty and dark feel, almost as if you were deliberately trying for an 'urban' angel effect, as opposed to the pristine/unspoiled snow angels we usually see photographed (you could almost title your image 'dark angel') . I also like Olaf's color and JimH's goggle version, but for different reasons. -John(ebones)

Thanks Jim! We have all 3 versions here temporarily so they are easy to evaluate and discuss. I would have never thought of doing what you did. Cindy

I made an attempt at modifying this and put it in the "Pending" gallery. I hope you don't mind. I tried a bit of an experiment to bring out the contrast. It's not great, but it might suggest a technique that you could use. I call it the "amber snow goggles" technique. Jim H.

Hey, my comment below made me think: Angel - white and light - hmm opposite - let's try to make this negative and _then_ bring up the highlights - another interesting version with lots of texture in the snow, but perhaps a bit hard to decipher for the untrained eye... I am not suggesting you make this negative - just sharing my thoughts in a brainstorm kind of way...

I figured that the darkness in the depressions was due to 'dirt', but feel the snow on top should be pure, white and innocent to render the image light and angelic...

On a different note, at least she's not wearing shorts and sandals ;-) So she thinks snow is 'insane' and Americans are 'cold' - well, I guess that's better than the other way around, even if that may be closer to the truth, lol... Nah, just kidding, I don't really think Americans are more insane than any other population.

Hi Olaf. I did contrast this to bring out the texture and the shape which darkened the shadows. I was wondering if it was too much too. My goal was to be able to see all of that texture - which is hard when everything is white. There actually is a little dirt in the depressions since she dug down into the earth with her angel making. I can try the color version. The reason I went black and white was to emphasize the shapes in the snow, but I'll give it another try later. Thanks, Cindy

Cindy, I like the concept very much, but I think the snow looks too dirty. I tried to lift the highlights quite a bit, using curves and thought it was an improvement. I also introduced some blue toning, which seemed to help in making the snow look cleaner. Why did you opt for black and white?
