San Diego Harbor

I wasn't sure if by putting the title in the
image, I should also have put it in Arabic for
that website Gayle found! :)

Great texture on the hook, very suggestive background too

Ralph, thanks for posting the original, I think you made a great crop decision on your entry image, and I really do like the processing and final product.

Chris,
First of all... "woof!" :)

As for the lighting of the cables, they were 20 - 30 meters away so my flash would not have reached. The original shot was acutally quite a bit darker but I was able to use PS to brighten it up. I did not want to brighten it too much, but just enough to show the detail. I also had to play with the curves to bring out more of the background, as it was pretty washed out.

I shot about 100 images that day, and this shot was one of those unplanned "that's interesting, click!" It ended up being the most appealing of the lot. Thanks for the comments.

Here is the original (RAW converted to Jpeg w/only sharpness "3"):

Ralph, would it make you mad if I told you I have a dog named Otto, I love that name.

Anyway, the image is sooooo much better without the title. This image is a great example of how to uses DOF to your advantange. The bg image (the aircraft carrier) enforce the theme without beating you over the head. I also think that this image is so much better then if you would have shot the samething with just the OOF water in the background. Oh, also I think that the OOF highlights on the water are also wonderful and enhance this image. Good job.

If I was to make a critical comment on this it would be the light on the foreground element. It seems from the BG that it was a pretty sunny day when you shot this, but the foreground element seems like it was in a bit more shade or something. It think that a little stronger or warmer light would make it pop more. Maybe a good case for some fill flash. Chris

Much better Otto!

Bruce, Chris and Dorys, thanks for the comments. Yes, Bruce that is an aircraft carrier in the background (USS Ronald Reagan, I think). I wasn't sure about the title in the image, so here it is without the title. - Ralph

I agree with Chris. The title in the photo really detracts from this wonderful shot.

BTW, I see we are starting to have a large San Diego contingency on these challenges. Maybe we need to form a CSLR_San Diego Club???

Ralph, I like this photo, and the title, but not the title in the photo. I really think that the title in the top right cheapens your photo, but that is just my opinion. Chris

Great start to the challenge! Love the bokeh from the waves and the detail in the cable. You can *just* make out the ship (aircraft carrier?) in the background. The title works too. On the other hand, I am overcome with sickening waves of camera envy! -- Bruce
