Beach Games *

This is the beach I grew up on. While visiting, I suddenly saw a little girl in an
orange bikini, just like I used to have 30 years ago. Had a bit of a Proustian
moment, and wanted to try and convey that in the faded look of the shot.
I've also been looking too much at the work of British Photographer Paul Graham,
who uses fog as a metaphor for division. I wanted to try and create that feeling
of remembering that innocent absorption, but at the same time feeling so removed
from it. Oddly, after taking this shot, I realised there was also a line drawn
in the sand, in the foregound!

Thanks for the comments. I wanted to keep the space rather than crop it because I needed it to emphasise the notion of distance. Any crop would have made the picture specifically about the girls, rather than the context.

I'm not sure what to say about 'not having shadows on a bright beach'??? lol. The shadows are there as shot, I think it was from something on the groyne/jetty. I didn't change the light levels at all, just some desaturation. I quite like shadows!

Interesting. I agree with the prior comment about the shadow on the first girl, but I'll add that I like this image better cropped. I tried cropping it to show only about the top-right quadrant of the way you have it framed, so it focused the attention more the girls' interaction than the overall scene. With the distant girl's pose, and the closer girl looking toward her, I think it makes a nice "decisive moment." I tend to error on the side of too much cropping rather than too little, so maybe that's just my personal bias. bee1000

I like the muted tone of the color in this a lot. You did convey a sense of the past. However, I find the shadow on the girl in the front to be distracting, on a bright beach it seems the swimmers wouldn't be shadowed. A very nice image nonetheless! ~Sharon
