Woodworking *

One of my other hobbies is scroll saw work. This is a closeup of the detailed fretwork of a small wooden bowl. There was no staining or painting involved. Different woods were used to give the variation in color.

I made a number of these little bowls for Christmas presents a couple years ago. They about drove me insane!! The thickness of the wood is around 1/16 inch. The overall bowl is around 6 inches wide. Because it was so thin, the wood was very fragile & had a tendency to break. After each layer was glued together, the many, many, MANY layers of wiping gel (varnish) needed to be applied. Each little opening needed to have the varnish removed before it dried.

In the end, the bowls were beautiful. Everyone was thrilled to receive one as a gift. I was able to keep a couple for myself. Which is good, because I don't think I'll be making any more soon. :)

Thank you all for the kind words. I really enjoy working with wood. Before the kiddos, I had a lot more time to do woodworking. I hope to get back to it more as the children get older.

The bowls proved difficult to photograph because of the high gloss finish. Also, shooting against a dark background, I had to be careful not to loose the detail on the dark wood (walnut). I also absolutely love the deep red color of the African Paduak. That's why this bowl ended up being the one I photographed. -- Jeannie

You have a nice talent for photography and woodworking. The bowls are striking. Your photo brings out the very nice wood tones and grain. Beautiful work on both the bowl and photo. - CameraShy09

Hi Jeannie, This is an interesting shot, and I appreciate your narrative, but I'm still left wondering what the rest of the bowl looks like. Could you post an overall image in the comments sections? Thanks. - Kelly
