Richie, it's a great photo, and you have a really pretty wife. Congrats on both.

I have to admitt that, even though I wish your first reason was the one I shot this for (as it would make me seem quite knowledable), the real reason for this shot is more "personal"...

The lovely lady in the picture is my wife of four years now... we met on late April and got married in late May of 01, hich made for a very quick courtship!!! I feel as I just picked her up out of knowhere, almost on a whim, and not only was it the best move I ever made, it has taken me on a ride of a lifetime... and I'm the better for it.

She's supported me through everything, including posing for me on a regular basis! Having said that, considering she's my "heavenly hitchiker", which means she's riding with me, maybe you should be concerned for the lady... =)

Aloha!! Richie...

An interesting photo for sure... I have to question some of your intent. By this I mean:

a) Is this a distinct commentary on the Cindy Sherman inspired phtograph dubbed,"The Hitchhiker", which is an extremely smart commentary on female rights and feminism. If so, you demonstrate here a modern take of that photo... a commentary of the male fantasy "girl" waiting on the side fo the road to make the "perfect lady". If so, Kudos for a great photo which grabs at the very heart of the meaning Cindy originally shot for.

or...

b) It is geared to the male drool audience. Ie. you take a photo of an attractive young lady and ride the curtails of a good looking lady to help you gain props for what is a decent photo already...just now you have a subject that draws much of the attention. If this is the case, I feel a little gyped, because the potential statement of this photo would be destroyed by a person who falls into exactly what Cindy Sherman was perhaps saying... If this is the case, I fear a photo of a real character hitchiking would have far outweighed this one and really added true depth.

Regardless, on technical merits, because I can't read your mind on this, the soft lighting suits the photograph well, the DOF is perfect as the cars in the background really add to the reality of the situation. I can't however stop thinking and realizing the photo is staged...which makes me want a more "charactered" hitchiker which would tell an interesting story. I can't help but feel bad for this poor woman if she gets int he wrong car!!! Technically a very good photo...I'd be interested to hear your commentary on what lies behind the photo...whether there is the depth I read into it...or whether it is merely a pretty lady photo.

Anyhow...sorry for the ramble...an interesting photo which made me think and is technically very good. If indeed it is a Cindy Sherman out-take...congratulations on a great photo...if it is for the men who like to look at pretty ladies, congrats as I'm sure the photo will apeal to them also...I personally react in a manner of concern for the lady rather than the Hubba-Bubba many others might react with.

Regardless, welcome to the challenges....I look forward to seeing many more technically great photos!

Cheers & good luck!

I like the composition. Those headlights show that there will be tooting, waving and (maybe) even stopping......one can only imagine. Welcome to the challenge, Richie! Shu

She is not really my type, but its a good photograph - The background is slightly distracting for me though.
