Bug Graffiti *
10th Place

Canandaigua, NY

6 second exposure of bugs flying under a light. ISO 800, F8, 40mm. I've been told that the zig-zag paths are reflecting the beating of wings.

Andrew, please do share the link to the larger size image. I have plenty of bandwidth. :) E-

So she thought you were crazy before you took the shot. But what does she think now?

This is certainly one of my absolute favorites in the current challenge.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I guess since I'm used to taking extended exposures, such as star trail shots, my mind just was in that mode on that night. I think my girlfriend thought I was nuts when I suggested taking the photo, and she went inside while I set up and took it. :-)

RK, I put the shot details up under the photo, including duration. Sharon, I hope you do go out and shoot a shot like this, and definitely let me know so I can see it! Earl, it's a bit easier to follow the bugs on a larger version. If you have any desire to see a larger version, let me know and I'll send you a link.

Thanks again. Andy

Andrew, WOW! This is such a remarkable photo. First of all, hats off to you for seeing it in your mind enough to even think about trying to photograph it. Second of all, it is just so compelling to look at. My eyes keep trying to trace the path of one or more of the bugs, and end up lost in a tangle of other trails. Well done! E-

Awesome picture and execution. Wonder how long you exposed this for?
Feels like the light beams are flowing out of the lamp.

This is such a great picture. I'm glad you submitted it to the challenge. I've stood in a swarm of bugs and shot a bunch of flash shots to try to get a good "freeze action" photo of the swarming critters, but none of them ever turned out all that great. This idea of a time exposure of bugs near a light is very clever and yielded an interesting picture. Not only is it pretty to look at, but it's very informative and entertaining on a number of levels. And it fits the theme of the challenge in a way that I hadn't imagined. Jim H.
