Fire Dance *

Three days ago I went walking at the park at night and it was full of sparkles from flying fireflies. I tried to capture some of this beauty. The image was formed by stacking 209 exposures.

I've heard of "stacked images" but never really knew what ti was. This is amazing!

i'm quite fascinated by this photo since i have never seen a real firefly before. this is amazing.

i've used a program called registax for astro photography. sure makes it easier than doing manually.

Thank you Lonnit, Jeannie, Sharon, Rob! Sharon, the process I used for stacking can be automated by creating an action in PS. I also found a program on the net called Image Stacker that could be used too. Roumen

Execellent, 70 Mins of shooting to get 1 pic - that's dedication.

Roumen, an amazing photo!! I can't believe you stacked 209 photos -- WOW! The result was well worth the work. -- Jeannie (jburly)

Thanks for sharing the process, Roumen. I will have to try it, but my efforts won't be as spectacular as yours as I don't have that kind of patience. Thanks for showing the way! Sharon

Thank you Sharon! The image stacking was done in PS. A new image was loaded in a new layer in an already opened image and the mode of the layer was changed to lighten. This allows the lighter pixels of the second image to show. Then the image was flattened. The process was repeated with the next image. Roumen

Wow!! I have spent numerous evenings in the last month trying to get images of fireflies. You have done what I never even conceived of, bravo! Is "stacking" done in the camera or in post processing? Great work!

Thank you Phil! It was a peaceful night and I just recuperated from the lack of sleep because I had two more frames with even greater number of exposures. It ended with the brightening of the sky in the morning. I uploaded a larger file too. Roumen

Wow! Devotion to the task! 209 exposures!
Nice one Roumen, would like to have seen a larger version though.
