Mark--I appreciate your extensive critique! My eye told me the image was exactly the way I intended, as I said before. The apple's shadow brings into the photo the dark contrast I always seem to prefer and, in my eyes, balanced the composition. Frankly, I look at this image as tho" it were an abstract of color and form. But, you've pointed out some interesting observations that help me look at it in a different way. Thanks and please continue to be open in your criticism. Shu
Shu, some of theblue's comments are right on but, I don't agree about the plate coloring... I think the plate coloring is a perfect match / compliment to your apple. At least for me personally. I like the composition of the apple and, even the crop of the plate as it is. The only thing that distracts me some, is the shadow of the apple on the plate and the strong reflection on the apple. . I dont' feel the apple shadow adds anything to the image, yet I like the shadow from the plate on the right side. Go figure? :-) There are ways of avoiding this, unless it was part of your intention? As for the blur of the plate, I also find that aspect appealing. So there you have it, Markjay's viewpoint. Not always a welcome viewpoint but, an honest one. Markjay
Thubleau--Since this image is not for commercial purposes, it is set up exactly the way I intended . The apple is the focus, the coloration on the dish is light reflected through colored glass and should appear to be a color wash and not in focus. In fact, it was the out of focus appearance I liked and the watercolor mix of shades of red and orange on the "dish." The image was chosen POTD on another website and many people seemed to like the style. It definitely is not a technical wonder, but overall, it has a pleasing appearance, I think. Who can predict the tastes of viewers.....not me, that's for sure! I thank you very much for your critique as you have pointed out several ways the image can be changed, should I wish to do so. Because of folks like you and many others, I have learned a great deal about photography, and I certainly admire your work. Shu
A couple of things here Shu.
I can remember putting up some shots with red wine and glasswear .
A couple of people commented that I had visible finger prints on the glass which I did not notice but it detracted from the shot.
So I went back and took more care and reshot it.
It's the same thing here with the apple.
When shooting food you need to find blemish free fruit and veg..........and the redess as well.
The other thing is the plate, trying using a clear glass plate or plain white or even a contrast in blue.
Once again your shutter speed is too high and you have sacrificed depth of field.
Try a slower shutter speed to give you an aperture of f/8 or over,it will also take away some of the softness.
I hope this helps a bit.
