I agree, Ed about washed out colors of flags, but ... I upped the saturation already for about +20. The flags were very strongly backlit, this was shot almost against the sun

Very nice moody sky...(*) do the flags demand something other than backlighting (washed out)? -Ed Hahn

Thanks for the tip, Olaf. Here is another attempt where I used the selection tool described by Roumen. It was not that simple anyway and I ended up cloning the neighboring sky to the flags on the copy of background and only after that the halos were gone. Lots of work which I believe only sellable images merit and this one is not

Still noticable and distracting. Maybe this could be helpful? - exept in your case you don't want to blur but instead sharpen, if I understand correctly. Many thanks for your comment, Victor. Yes, now I see some dust specks too. Softness around the flags appeared as follows. I tried to bring the local contrast of the sky and clouds to what I have seen, unprocessed frame came out considerably softer. To do this I applied a fairly strong dose of rough USM, around 100/50/2. This brings the contrast of the clouds to the level which approximates fairly well my original impression. BUT, it brings out the dust specks and creates white halos around flags. To fight these halos I deselected the areas of sky along the flags with feather 20 before applying the rough USM to the rest of the image. This eliminates white halos but creates the softer halos. Apparently, I have to repeat this process more carefully. Any suggestions are more than welcome

Looks like you have some sigificant dust on your sensor. Can you explain why the sky immediately surrounding the flags is softer than the rest? I find this to be quite distracting. If it's an artifact of something you were trying to do, let us know what it was you were trying, and maybe you can get some pointers on a better way. -- Victor
