Great shot Tracy; really like this one. Cheers. Vikas

I think the liquid is refracting, not blocking the light. Think of the liquid as a lens.

Perhaps you're right Victor - I'm really at a loss. Actually, I looked at all my other shots, and the straw didn't appear in any of them, even those lit from the other side, as I had previously thought. I doesn't seem to matter which angle I shot at either. The straw did appear in shots without the liquid, so I'm thinking perhaps it must have something to do with the liquid blocking the light. Maybe if I'd added a light at the front, it would have shown - Tracy!

Here's where I think the straw is:

Finding the straw -- now there's something that is the type of challenge I enjoy. I can see the straw above the glass, through the glass, reflected from the top surface of the liquid, and also refracted through the top surface. So you can, actually see it through the liquid. What I haven't found yet is the straw through the glass AND the liquid. Interestingly, in the image through the top surface, it looks like the straw is in front of the golf ball. But that image I think is a reflection of the golf ball, so we're actually seeing the straw on the far side of the golf ball. Is that correct? In that case, we would have to look through the thickest part of the liquid to see the straw. But it's curved, so it acts as a magnifying glass. That means any offset from center will be magnified considerably from the actual position. I bet the barely lighter blob at the upper left of the liquid is an image of the straw. That's my best guess anyway. Because of the magnification resulting from the curvature of the glass, I'll bet you could easily affect how much of the straw is visible by just a slight shift in the position of the straw. That could be useful if you want to change the composition at all. -- Victor

Thanks Lonnit and Markjay for the compliments. As to the straw not appearing 'in' the drink, your guess is as good as mine, but I think it has something to do with the lighting... when lit from the other side, the straw appeared, but I didn't like the lighting on the straw - I preferred this side. Or perhaps it has something to do with camera angle, as you can see the top of the ball reflected in the top of the drink... I'm really not too sure at this point, and I've always sucked at physics anyway... if anyone has any ideas, I'm always eager to learn. Cheers and Merry Christmas - Tracy!

the cool colors are very beautiful in this, tracy. you did a nice job in composition.
my one question for you is; the straw. is it because of the angle with which you chose to shoot this, that the straw does not apear IN the water at all? I know from experience that photographing subjects with water and objects that are in and out of the water can play 'tricks' on our eyes so i'm really curious about this subject... maybe i'll learn something new today? again beautiful image. markjay

Good composition, well framed, nicely lit and good choice of colors. I like it.

Well I'm glad you chose blue liquid, it adds a touch of coolness, it goes so well with the glass and black background. Go snack ATTACK!!! ;-)

Lol Dorys - that was quick! I had to make a run to the liquor store before I had the right liquid to add... not even any blue food coloring in the house to make a fake drink :0( And now the sad part is, I can't drink the drink cause I had to use white out on all the awful labels on the ball, and I'm sure that would'nt be too healthy - oh well... Tracy!

Now this one i like! I was going to comment that I'd like to see liquid in the cup but got distracted with work before I was able to post my comments. You must have read my mind. :-) ~dorys
