Afterlife of an Iris *

I picked this iris yesterday (Saturday) with plans to shoot it in all its glory. One thing led to another and I didn't get it done. This morning it had closed up and I thought about picking another one. Then I thought why not try to get something a little less stereotypical than a beautiful flower in full bloom. I set it up with a black background (duvateen) near a west-facing window. The soft window light really brought life to this dying blossum.

Thanks guys, I'll go back to the drawing board. This flower is history but I'll try another.

Jeff, Iris is hard to shoot with side lighting. I suggest back lighting and front fill with a reflector. That should create more details between with in the whites. I found shooting white flower requires very soft defused lighting. - Dick tsang

I'm very puzzled about your settings here, Jeff, though as I've not used extension tubes maybe that explains some - f/22, 1 sec exposure? And yet, despite the "soft" light, the whites are still somewhat blown and (sorry) but it all looks a little unsharp too. Phil
