Farewell to fun *

I hate long dark winters here and today the first snow was falling on my balcony ...

MUCH better!!! My eye does wander over there for a moment of curiosity, but with the blur softening things it I now feel that it doesn't keep my eye there - no rough edges to catch onto! LOL! The super interesting thing, is that suddenly the texture and bit of color on the table top really pop now! You've done a great job enhancing the main subject by softening the unimportant part. I think this could be used in a textbook illustrating how critical the DOF is in focusing attention on the main subject. Excellently done! Congrats! ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, I tried to modify it in the direction suggested by you. I hope that I have not overdone it. Is it better now? The original version is found at

I definitely wouldn't want you to replace the background! I'm just thinking about burning it in a bit so it's not bright enough to distract the eye from that great stuff up front. :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit and Shu, thanks a lot for inspiring comments. Lonnit, I tend to agree. Probably with less background detail this would be more convincing but, this is how my house is situated. And, I hate to cut it out and replace with something else in PS, this would go beyond what I accept as an admissible modification of a photo. It was not possible to get a fair amount of natural blur due to wide angle. I shall try to blur and burn a bit in PS

I absoltulely LOVE the deck and the chairss and the texture of the snow and the "snow shadows" where the snow didn't hit the deck. My problem lies in the fact that I want to keep looking over that deck into the background, feeling compelled to believe it has some importance because it keeps drawing me there, but I go and there is no payoff. I wonder why I am there. Perhaps if you burned in the background so it was less bright and then it wouldn't fight for prominence in the shot? I so do love the 'real subject' here! ~ Lonnit

This is definitely a scene I will be looking at shortly--maybe even today! The solitude of the shot really gets to me. A peek over the railing adds a little warmth to the image because there are neighbors just around the corner......Shu
