The advantage of a small point and shoot camera is that sometimes you can reach it through openings in safety fences and railings and get shots that would be impossible with a normal camera. I can't even hope to replicate this shot with my 1D Mark II on a future trip.
I basically had to look at the sun and guess where the shadow of the eiffel tower would be. I couldn't look through the viewfinder of a camera hanging an arm's length off the side of the tower, and without digital back then, I had to rely on luck.
