I redid the image---no sharpening for the eyes or mouth. The rest of the image I used unsharp mask: 100, .3, 0. I'm not sure this improved the image? Actually, I think that the second image of the captain is more interesting.
Thanks for the comments-I'm always open to improvement and without critical comment, it is very hard to achieve.

falevine: I agree the sharpening had enhanced the texture of the skin for this subject, but IMHO a selective masking layer to apply this sharpen only where needed would have worked better. For example, while his skin gained some details in texture his teeth and eyes suffered from over sharpening.
Anna Yu: Thank you for your comment. In this image, I tried to bring out the texture of the skin in order to increase this very interesting man's character. Possibly it is overdone?
