"I am not telling you that you cannot write comments anonymously. Go ahead, I'll know you by the fact that you don't write any name - until one day, when someone else writes an anonymous comment that is just plain disrespectful. By that time I might have "gotten to know you" well enough, so that I can tell that this new, nasty comment is not from you - but then again, I might not..."
Well, just about anyone can come in here and post as a Guest and you'll have to judge each comment as you read it. I don't have any control over what someone else will do (when posting as Guest). Anyway, back to photography. There are plenty of creative entries here.

I am sorry, who ever you are, I didn't mean to offend! You asked what difference a name by your comment would make. I tried to explain why I prefer a name with any given comment. The reason I brought up the "no-name-thing" here, is quite simply that this is where I noticed an anonymous comment first. It has nothing to do with this particular image nor your opinion about it! Sometimes people write anonymous comments by mistake - they simply forget to write their name.

I am not telling you that you cannot write comments anonymously. Go ahead, I'll know you by the fact that you don't write any name - until one day, when someone else writes an anonymous comment that is just plain disrespectful. By that time I might have "gotten to know you" well enough, so that I can tell that this new, nasty comment is not from you - but then again, I might not... Anyway, I value your comments - they seem to be honest, which I like. I would just respect it even more if you would back it up with a name. You are just as entitled to writing your honest opinion as the next guy.

"but the fact that you do not dare to stand by your comments with one and the same name could be considered a weakness"
Oh, I do stand by my comments. Why are you trying to impose how I as a visitor to this gallery should feel about any particular image? It's a challenge (and comments are welcome) gallery is it not? And because someone happens to hold a view different from your own to then try and lessen it by making denigrating comments about that persons character? Is that not displaying a weakness of some sort? Just a thought.

"In the past, we've had nasty comments from anonymous people - just plain criticism without any constructive element."
So, why are you telling ME this? I gave a reason for how I saw the image....as valid as anyone elses.

"Your comments (I am assuming you are the same person who left anonymous comments on other images in the gallery as well) don't seem to fall in this category,"
Isn't that obvious from reading it?

"but the fact that you do not dare to stand by your comments with one and the same name could be considered a weakness"
Oh please, because you don't like my comment you start with the name calling? How mature is that? Who are you to judge someones character when you know nothing about them and just because they prefer to post as a Guest? As I stated previously, no matter who you post as...it's what you say that matters.

" - and detracts from the value of your comments."
Well, I can't help how you take my comments. You'll feel one way, someone else will feel another way. That's life. Judge what is written and not who wrote it. As I've already stated, no matter what my name is the comments are no less valid. I'm starting to get the feeling if I had posted "wow, great image" you would not be pursuing it in this manner :) Obviously not everyone feels the same way about any particular image and you just have to accept that fact of life. I gave you my reasoning and how you take it is not in my control nor should it.

"You may use any name (and hence stay anonymous), but preferably use the same name every time. This lets the rest of us get to know you through your opinions. There is a sense of community in these challenges, which I very much like - and would hate to lose."
An open-minded community will be accepting of all. This is a challenge gallery and open to comments the last I checked. I would recommend paying more attention to what is being said rather than who said it. The same can be said when it comes to voting for an image. Vote for what you think is the best image and not who took the image.

"Through peoples' pictures, captions, comments, and even emails, I feel I've gotten to know many of the regular participants, even if I have never met any of them and in some cases, don't even know their real name. If we all left anonymous comments there would be no community. --Olaf"
Your fears are unfounded. Whether I post as Guest or Joe or Mary the community is the community. Guest is a part of the community as much as Joe or Mary. Somehow I get the feeling this isn't so much about community but that I disagree with a particular image :)

In the past, we've had nasty comments from anonymous people - just plain criticism without any constructive element. Your comments (I am assuming you are the same person who left anonymous comments on other images in the gallery as well) don't seem to fall in this category, but the fact that you do not dare to stand by your comments with one and the same name could be considered a weakness - and detracts from the value of your comments. You may use any name (and hence stay anonymous), but preferably use the same name every time. This lets the rest of us get to know you through your opinions. There is a sense of community in these challenges, which I very much like - and would hate to lose. Why, does it make my comment anymore valid? Whether my name is Joe, Kathy, Bob or Mary what difference does it make?
Canon DSLR Challenge16-Jul-2004 21:24
Care to leave your name when commenting? --Olaf
Guest 16-Jul-2004 11:19
You mean my comment? Nope. The "hand" in this image is very secondary in the context of reading a book.
Canon DSLR Challenge16-Jul-2004 08:55
My guess is that David McGaughey wrote the previous comment, am I right? --Olaf
Guest 16-Jul-2004 08:40
This image may be artistic but it has less to do with hands than some of the other images in this gallery. Hands in this context are secondary.
Guest 13-Jul-2004 13:33
I keep coming back to this, it's such a striking composition. I think the deep shadows are the key, they make the rest of the image "float". You can't see the physical context, and that lends an element of mystery. Wonderful.

This works well in B&W.
Nice.

LOL! I guess I did Olaf, after embarassing myself and being shamed into it! LOL! See, for these, the difference was all heart. The others were perfunctory images and these were calling me. The late afternoon sun was streaming into my living room again, which is always an inspiring thing, and so I asked my son to sit there and read a book. I kept the camera focused on his hands and waited for the shots to present themselves. The core of it was that an artist was not shooting the first time. :) Thanks so much for your comments. I guess now you can see why I truly do appreciate negative input - to me it's all actually positive. I wouldn't have gotten these shots if my friends let me get away with being lazy the first time. :) ~ Lonnit

Jeez Lonnit - you just needed the kick in the butt I guess!?!? This is absolutely amazing! This is to the first ones you posted what a Master of Photography would be to an avid snapshooter. Hard to believe it is done by the same artist, this is just so much better! - And this one is my favorite of your "new ones" (after you got kick-started), but they are all miles better! Love the light and contrast here... --Olaf
