I didn't know that an egg can look so good.

Ann,
Very intriguing shot. Not your typical egg! Outstanding! Roberta

Ann, very elegant articulation of the challenge theme. The textures and side-lighting are well-done.

Ann, I was thinking of suggesting color balance, but I decided not to because the white of the paper is very white around the bright part of the egg. I was wondering if that were sunlight. I didn't think you were the type of person to set up a scene like this with multicolored light sources, but your explanation makes sense. I guess the yellow on the top of the egg comes from the incandescent lights, presumably straight above the egg. Is the room blue by any chance? -- Victor

I love the light and the odd angle that makes one wonder how the egg is positioned. It's dramatic and keeps one on edge! ~ Lonnit

Wow Victor! Quite an analysis. First of all, I took this awhile back so I'm going by somewhat hazy memory. But here's what I remember. It is sitting on its side on a piece of art paper (hence the texture). The paper was sitting on my dining room table which has windows on three sides - many south facing, some west facing and an east facing sliding door. The light source was sunlight striking the egg's surface. There are eight incandescent can lights in the ceiling of the room and they were on. Also in the kitchen area there is a stained glass ceiling fixture and that was on too. I fear the blue may have come from the white balance I used but I am not sure. I don't remember the exact date I took this but the slant of light suggests in fall or winter and late in the day. Hope that helps explain this Victor. Thanks for your comments. Ann

This has a marvelous play of light and shadow, Ann.
Stunning image!

My first impression was that the egg was sitting in a room with north and east facing windows and that a beam of light was shining on the egg from the east facing window and blue light is coming from the north facing window. But now I'm thinking it's just a spotlight shining directly on the egg. This light is bright enough to cause some lens flare, which you can see at lower right. I've decided that the blue and yellow are probably also artificial light sources. It took me a while to even notice the yellow (upper, right part of egg). Also, I first thought the egg was sitting on paper, but now I think it's terricloth (sp?) or something similar. I also wondered about the blue of the cloth, because it's white near the egg. This makes me think the cloth is actually white and that there is a soft blue light to contrast with the hard white light. The yellow light must also be a soft light because I don't see a shadow from the egg cast by it.

As to balancing the egg, I've decided that was just an illusion and it's really sitting on its side.

Oh, yeah. I must not leave out the glowing of the inside of the egg. Altogether, there is a wonderful dance of light (more than one meaning of light) colors and delicate textures making this a very pleasing picture to look at. I'll probably come back to it frequently even though I've already spent a good deal of time on it.

So, was I close? -- Victor

Ann, This is a beautiful picture. Don't spill the beans yet, but I'm wondering how you achieved the lighting and how you propped the egg. -- Victor
