Duck Patterns
podster*

Sorry about the duck. I was more interested in the patterns made by its trail

Since we're sharing suggestions, I thought I'd post what I would have done with this image. In an attempt to make the image more of an abstraction, I probably would have cropped as shown. I reversed the image because somehow I like diagonals from the lower left better than from the lower right. There's no more room to swim. OTOH, the duck is looking backward. The trees still show nicely in the picture, too. Please note that I'm not saying any of this improves the picture. But it's more in line with what I probably would have done, given the theme. -- Victor

I really like this shot. love the duck so I know where the ripple is coming from. The tree reflections are great too. Nice shot

Thanks Anna. That's the kind of comment I like :)

Sorry for no constructive suggestion but I think this shot is great.

Thanks for all your comments - Olaf especially for taking the time to show what he would do with the same source.

My reasoning for the positioning of the duck was many fold
1. To keep it on the upper line of the thirds - ideally it would be in the corner, but that would involve sacrificing the ripple line into the corner.
2. To give it room to move - avoiding it falling off the frame, as it were.
3. I was trying to keep some of the reflected trees with their semi-symettrical (hmm. that's not spelt right) pattern in the top half as a secondary pattern image, and the circular drop patterns too.

That was my thinking, anyway!

I'm not sure whether I like the increased saturation or not yet. I'll consider it over the weekend! Of course, E (Earl?) below probably will disapprove as he likes it as pseudo B&W.

Thanks again for taking the time to experiment with the picture - most certainly keep it there to show me and others how it could be viewed in someone else's hand.

Like the image, and I like what Olaf has suggested, with the possible exception of the frame (but that's just a personal thing). I think the duck is better if it's not so central. Phil

Nice to see really constructive comments, not just altering someone else's shot but telling them exactly what steps to take. It helps the rest of us learn too - Thanks Olaf for taking the time to do this.

I like the neat pattern with the edge of ripples starting at the lower right corner. My first thought on how one could improve this, was to crop some off at the top in order to more successfully convey to the viewer that this is mainly a picture of the water ripples. My second thought was to increase the contrast and maybe add some more color saturation.

With all these ideas, I just had to try them before recommending them, so I downloaded your image and played with crop, contrast and color saturation. My conclusion: New Adjustment Layer Levels, clicked on "Auto"; New Adjustment Layer Hue/Saturation, Saturation +60; Cropped like shown below before I did Canvas Size and increased it 30 pixeles in each direction with white as Canvas Extension Color. You told us not to hold back, so I hope this is OK with you. I'll take down linked image, if you'd like. --Olaf

Actually, the photo is in the colours that were there at the time - it was early evening on a rather overcast day. The duck has a bit of green on his head, and there is a hint of blue in the sky reflection top left. That's just one of the trials of living on a rather damp cold island!

But thanks for the compliments!

Nice capture. You've timed it excellently to get such a perfect pattern in the ripple. I think the B&W shows the pattern very well. Nice job. E-
