9 Dragon Wall Detail

This is the detail of the 9 Dragon Wall recently erected in Chicago Chinatown. Although much smaller in scale, this wall is modeled after the wall in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. The fascia is made by a porcelain company in China using traditional methods , but the installer is a local masonry company in Chicago. I am proud to have been somewhat involved in this project as translator and coordinator. This is the middle dragon of the 9.

Due to space limitations of the its location, this wall is only 10 meters long, 6 meters high including the base. It took 2 months to complete the masonry work. We had the porcelain makers from China to provide technical advises on the installation. Weighing 60-100 pounds each, the porcelain pieces are one of a kind fabrications. There were no back-up pieces made. The whole thing is like a jigsaw puzzle for the mason. Even more interestingly, the best mason we found for the job is from Poland and spoke only limited English, and the technical advisors from China don¡¯t speak English at all. Miraculously, they somehow were able to find common ground and mutual trust in each other to complete the work. I remember the Chinese party was frustrated and worried sick in the beginning, because one mistake in the installation process could mean the end of the project. In the end, though, every time I stopped by the jobsite, they were all smiling and gave me the thumbs up for the Polish masons. Btw, the original one in China is over 30 meters long. - Jing

The detail on this dragon is fascinating, and what a marveloous opportunity to be associated with such a future landmark. You mention this is smaller than the original, about how long is one lóng :>> on the Chicago wall? -- R.J. (Imager)
