This is a stained glass window designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany depicting John the Baptist. It is now on display at Smith Museum of Stained Glass in Chicago.

I did think of putting this in the exhibition gallery, but since it meets all the criteria of the eligible gallery, I decided to put it here eventually. I think photography was, is, and should alway be, foremostly a documentary tool. Even though from time to time, we can be creative, set up our own shots, create our own scenes, but that doesn't mean we should ignore the opprotunity to capture the things that don't belong to us, say the dramatic expression of an actor, the movements of a dancer or the work of a sculptor or painter. I hate to say this, but personally I think photography is more about the art of recording and presentation, than the art of creation. - Jing

Since you brought it up, how about some discussion about photographing others' art? My daughter and I had a discussion about this. Should it count for the challenge? Not lost on her, of course, was that my exhibition entry corduroy seam is such an example (she was modeling the seam for me). I see both as being fair photography, but one is capturing someone else's cleverness. The other is creating it yourself. Anyone else care to comment? -- Victor

amazed that you were allowed to take this shot, I was in hampton court the other day all geared up only to find that there was no photography allowed, man that place has some amazing glass. Nice art in art rob mc

Thanks Earl. I can see two reasons why stained glasses are difficult to photograph. First is the relfection off the glass panels. Second is that they are difficult to meter due to high contrast and wide dynamic range. This one is shot with a compensation of negative 1-2/3 stops. DSLRs helps a lot because of the instant feedback. - Jing

Beautiful photo. I've never done it, but I've heard it is hard to get a really good photo of a stained glass window. I think you've done just that. Great work. E-

Beautiful shot Jing. This is a great example of the use of complementary colors by artists. Interesting how the artist used the blues and blue-greens in a diagonal placement behind the figure. Great capture! Roberta

Angela, I didn't know Chicago has this museum either until I stumbled upon it last weekend. I took a walk to take some pictures of the frozen Lake Michigan. After it got really cold, I took refuge at Navy Pier (which I normally avoide because of the tourists). There it was the brand new museum of stained glass. Many pieces there are truly gorgeous, but they are somewhat difficult to photograph because of the reflections. Some turn out ok though, like this one. - Jing

Stained glass is so exquisite. This is gorgeous. I had no idea Chicago even had a stained glass museum!! I'll have to go there! -- angela :)
