Thanks for your comment and advice. I've tried out unsharp mask and like the effect. The photo was scanned from an old print, which was unfortunately was quite soft. This was about as sharp as I could get it without degrading the image further. Skichi :)
Skichi, super picture, the details of hair and attire really kept my interest. (*) If you have Photoshop, you may want to consider unsharp mask with e.g., (amount=20 and radius=10, threshold=0) this should "clear" the image and provide a noticeable increase in apparent "sharpness" without losing the overcast mood.
