Rainy*
by Olaf.dk

This is not a planned shot, but taken on a rainy walk with some friends of mine - always bring a camera!
I suddenly saw a photographic opportunity in the orange-red rain clothes against the green hedge.
I asked her to stop in her tracks and let me take a picture. So glad I did!

Thanks a lot R.J., for the positive comments! I am especially happy that the colors looked right to you too. You never know what your images look like on other people's monitors. With the comments from you and Joe, I feel more confident that the colors are somewhat correct! --Olaf

Outstanding framing, really draws attention to the face, where you captured a great expression. Color and sharpness are just right. ... R.J. (Imager)

Thanks for the kind words - whoever you are! Maybe, like Carolyn, you can see that she is older in my "Couple"-picture? http://www.pbase.com/image/24992393) --Olaf

I would have guessed she was 13 or 14! Great shot. Makes you smile to look at it.

Olaf: Skin tones look quite natural to me now. Nice. --Joe

Joe, thank you so much for your constructive comments! They are very much appreciated!!! The magenta tinted highlights (which also screwed up the skin tones here) were a phenomenon that would happen every once in a while with the G1. Looking at the levels, I saw that the red channel was clipped in the highlights. To get rid of this, I did some tweaking in Lab-colors and 16 bit color-depth, and updated the image here in the gallery (after converting back to RGB and 8 bit). Looks more natural on my monitor now, what do you think? For comparison, I have put the originally posted picture here [http etc, but no www before it]: homepage.mac.com/me2/.Pictures/Misc/122-2202_web.jpg --Olaf.dk

Hey Olaf: Couple comments. First, this is a great portrait. The smile, the eyes, her attire all blend to give it warmth and charm. There is clearly a trusting connection between subject and photog. As for the colors, the red does seem to be (paradoxically) a little faded while also being a bit strong. I dunno if I would have thought too much of it had you not said something, but it seems that efforts to tame it a bit could allow more focus on the important stuff (eyes, smile). Also, the skin tones seem a little off. I don't have Photoshop up, but my guess is bending the Green Channel *up* a bit in Curves would put it where it needs to be. If I can offer technique help on any edits, I'm glad to do so; drop me a note. But, again, a wonderful portrait. Likely one of the strongest images I've seen you post (IMO). --Joe

LOL! You know I realized she was older than I thought after I saw another picture of your subject...heh. What a lucky girl!

Thanks Carolyn! I guess youth is a relative term, but at the time this shot was taken she was 33 or 34 years old and a mother of two little boys... --Olaf

I really like the intense red - I think it's a beautiful portrait. She has this wonderful gleam of mischievousness, which seems perfect for her youth.

Does this look too saturated? I pulled down the midtones some with Levels and the image looks more saturated. I really don't feel confident about the gamma calibration of my monitors! --Olaf
