It's a location near where I live, and the gasworks (the structure behind me) has always had an appeal to me for some kind of photo. In this instance, a couple of unique things had happened that were the catalyst for the shot.
Firstly, I had recently bought a Raynox wide angle for my G3. I love the distortions you can get, and I love the perspectives it gives. And I was aching to do something with it. Secondly, the CTF challenge at the time was portraits. None of my friends trust me to do anything sensible so they rarely participate in my stuff. Thirdly, my toddler was asleep in the car and I didn't want to wake him.
So basically the engine is still running with my boy in the car, hence I'm not far from the vehicle. It was too much effort to get the tripod out adn too noisy as I didn't want to wake him, so I'm using a beanpod on the ground. And the clouds that day and the perspective through the lens just all fell into place. And I got my gasworks image :-)
It's one of my favourite shots, and it won the challenge. So that's it (the short version)
I love the image - it's just awesome. After a minute or so I wonder, what prompted you to get out of the car, put the camera on the tripod at about two feet, lean down and shoot this shot? I am curious what the inspiration was. Awesome job! - Ralph Otto
iso: As in the prior image, terrific use of perspective to inject strong character. This has a music video quality about it. Works extremely well in B&W. As a side note, as I searched for gallery covers, I would have pestered you for this image had I not needed something in color. I saw it in Angela's thread back in June. Liked it then and like it even more now. Strong! --Joe
