Michael, Thanks for your comments. This is the root of an Arbutus tree, with peeling bark. You can see bark remnants and a few pieces of dried grass at lower left. In the upper right, is what appears to be a burned portion of the root. This was a quick grab shot as I hiked, so my memory of it is a bit vague. I think it is the root, although given the burned section, it could be a downed tree. - Peter
