Thanks. The technique involves the lighting effects filter in photoshop. At the bottom of the dialog box is an option to choose a texture channel. It can add a great deal of definition and detail to the right photo. (Not recommended for portraits! But I've used it on portrait backgrounds and come up with an effect I've liked.)
