DEFINITELY, the 'stars' are reflections. Definitely. :) ~Lydia

Well, how can I possibly pull an image that causes people to analyze its elements to this degree!! LOL Thanks, k2 for seeing qualifying elements that I most certainly did not know existed. I guess if it is a "mix" of both shadow and reflection it will be able to stand as a legal entry? (There could be more fun if others would join in with their take on this.) shu

Ther's a whole jungle of both reflections and shadows here, a fine mix, and on several surfaces: Both the white background as well as directly on the glass itself. white surfaces aren't called reflectors for nothing. I think Lydia will agree that the little "suns" in the glass are reflections, as well as the brighter areas near top of the green vase. But you wouldn't see the green or red colors unless light at the respective frequencies was reflected off that white surface.

The wavy pattern in the reflected areas is where the glass in the objects is thicker, so some light is blocked. Now, that's *partly* shaded areas. Again: A nice mix.

Another example: Look at the bright e-shaped curly thingie near bottom of the front of the green vase. Can shadows be *brighter* than the original? That would be something :). There's so much light reflected off that area that the glass color can hardly be seen anymore, and even the white surface is brightened and burnt out in a few pixels there if I see right. The shape stems from how the light breaks in the bottom of the vase, which on the real object is out of sight. But I think it's safe to assume that the bottom not can be significantly thinner than the rest of the vase. There is a broad shade along the bottom indicating it's actually a lot thicker than the top we see. So the bright "e" is drawn by a lense effect, a more focused but yet distorted image of the light-source. A reflection.

Look again at that thick bottom shadow along the green vase: Closest to the red vase the red one actually reflects on or through the green vase.

The egg and rock, otoh, mostly only throw shadows, although I wonder about the slightly brighter area under the egg.. is there a reflector somewhere else too, out if sight? Very elegant and funny picture anyway, shu. I definitely vote for keeping it.

After doing some research, I must agree with you, Lydia. If I've learned anything from this challenge is what does not constitute a "reflection." LOL shu

You are very tactful in your critiques......and have you noticed, no one has joined this controversy.......I'll pull the image soon. Thanks, shu

PS: Oh, will we ever have have a "brightly colored shadows" challenge? LOL

Yes, it does to me, Shu. And that's why I think this is a shadow instead of a reflection... the light is going through the object and the object is obstructing it a bit. Not as much as it would if the object were solid, I agree.

But to me, a reflection is what happens with a mirror.. the object is reflected back to the original. No light is going through the object (although it could), the object is just reflected back to the original in a shiny surface. In this case, I really like how the color of the glass makes the colored shadow. That's unique and very pretty, but the shadow is going away from the object, not back to it as a reflection does.

Does that make sense, Shu? I'm interested in others' opinions on this. As I said, none will be moved for not meeting the challenge, so I'm just talking as a member... not as the hostess. :) ~Lydia

My man-friend, Ed, just commented a "shadow" is an image on a surface created by obstructing light. Does this make sense? shu
Canon DSLR Challenge29-May-2009 02:46
Thanks, Lydia. I think this qualifies since the counter is a reflective surface....but glass, such as mirrors and glass surfaces create reflections, too. It will be interesting to hear what the others think. shu

This is totally stunning, Shu! Is it truly a reflection? Or is it a shadow, as it appears?

I don't understand the white stone's 'reflection/shadow'. It has me confused and studying. Tell all, please.

Oh wait! Is it a black stone and a white stone? That makes more sense for the shadow version. Still very interesting, unique, and fun. ~Lydia
