Thanks everyone for the kind comments.
Olaf, I did apply a filter that slightly softened the background and enhanced the early evening colors.
Debbi, these critters are really hard to get close to. Fortunately, I have a covey come through my backyard almost very morning and evening. I had a window set up in advance and shot behind a curtain using my 70-200mm lens.

Nice portrait of the quail! Did you add some soft-filter or blurring in post? The photo is plenty sharp where it needs to be, but in other areas seem to have some kind of softening filter applied (noticeable around right-most flower, for example).
