Thanks, everybody! Eric -- you're right, the crop you suggest changes the mood quite a bit, and in a good way. But since I already submitted it this way and I've been living with it this way since last year, I think I'll leave it alone. Shu -- what's really surprising is that this was the fourth sunflower I passed that was growing through the pavement, so I already had the shot in mind and I was watching out for this one.

You can't keep a good thing down - or - the power of Nature - or - whatever other interpretation the viewer may see in this, there is no doubt this is an image with a message!

Not a bad shot Joshua, some nice bacground blur brings the attention back to the sunflower. Possible crop from the top and the side would have helped to emphasis the flower a bit more. good work. eric

Very true, Mary Anne. I was driving from SF to NY and I gave myself the goal of taking one good picture in every state. Usually this involved seeing something, screeching to a halt on the shoulder, walking back about five minutes down the road, and seeing if there was a picture there. This was my favorite. I don't recommend this method for taking great pictures (for one thing, all you ever see is what's on the highway), but I will say this -- it really develops your ability to see what's around you and spot a picture in an instant, because that's all the time you have to react. It's good training.

Very nice, Joshua...bright yellow sunflower with a yellow line leading us into the OOF background. You must have run across the highway to get this facing the oncoming traffic. Glad you apparently made it back safely. --Mary Anne
