What an amazing shot to catch that bowling ball in flight! I bet it was loud, too! -dtallakson

That is a great shot Jim... you caught the ball... or is that one of those 'sensor spots'... lol.

Well, think I have seen it all now????.... We used to do that with fire crackers and ball bearings when we were kids, but got into heaps of trouble when we smashed a shop window once!!!

Bowling Balls.... now that is way outta my league???

We would be thrown in the 'slammer' if we tried that stunt down here.... even 'air rifles' are 'illegal here (unless one is a crim'.... they can carry guns but not honest people???)

Oh well..... 'Boys will be Boys"....? ;-)

I believe that bucket just has water in it. It's good to wipe out the bore with a damp swab to make sure there are no glowing embers in there before you put in the next batch of black powder, so I'm guessing that's what it's for.

For some reason, anything to do with bowling reminds me of "The Big Lebowski".

I just checked, and you can see the outhouse target on Google Earth :)

42°53'0.81"N 106°16'52.95"W

I don't know why, but that made me laugh! Jim H.

Oh yeah... what's in the 'square' bucket, please? ~Lydia

LOL @ your title, Jim.. .and LOL at this: "When someone hits the outhouse, they win that pot."

Not something I'd "shoot" for. LOL!~Lydia

Absolutely unbelievable!!! Thanks for the explanations and background, Jim. I am blown away - never thought stuff like this happens. :-)

This is a bowling ball cannon that a couple of the local guys made. We actually get a number of bowling ball mortars and cannons at the annual cannon shoot here, and they have a competition to see who can come closest to (or hit) an outhouse that's out at about 425 yards. See this aerial view:

The sounds from all of these cannons can be extremely loud. Hearing protection is worn by just about everyone in the area. But the bowling balls are, to me, the best sound because the bores are huge, making for a very nice, low, boom, but then you also get the bizarre intermittent whistling sounds from the finger-holes in the balls as they fly while spinning.
There is a pot of prize money that grows each year from the entry fees for the bowling ball shooting. When someone hits the outhouse, they win that pot.
One year, they had a dummy of a man dressed only in his red union suit with the trap door open seated in the outhouse. Nobody was told "he" was in there so that when someone hit the outhouse, the poor old guy would be exposed, scaring the daylights out of the crowd.

You've got to be kidding me! :-)

Please do explain? Some type of World Book of Records How Far Can You Shoot a Bowling Ball Competition? :-)

What was a sound like...? It looks as if this might have been pretty noisy?
