Yes, Michael, I could see how the detail might have been lost in the shrinkage. I do like the border, but it's truly the lack of balance on the part of the other 3 sides that made me take note. I'd hate to see you rid the image of it, as it is a nice contrast to the softness of the rest of the image. In fact, I love the roughness and it would serve well on all the edges, but yes, perhaps more subtly on the other 3. It sounds like the large print already exhibits these characteristics and I will forgive the loss of detail from the compression. Thanks for the explain. :) ~ Lonnit

Thank you all for the supportive comments, deeply appreciated.

Nico, yes there's many an hour here but most is in the gathering of the images. The large clock hangs in my workroom. I see it every day and slapped my forehead after a day or two into the challenge. The large gears are from the exposed clock works in the Stanford University clock tower. The background book page from a large old folio that I own. The book, monkey, and other astronomical pieces are actually one-inch scale artisan-made miniatures collected by my mom. I got lucky and had a cloudy sky at the start of the challenge and the model is exactly that, a model.

tv, I'm a fan of the work of Marcel Duchamp (most notably "Nude Descending a Staircase"). I did not know of the piece you referenced...extremely interesting and I'll take the time to learn more of it. Thank you, Penny, for the link.

Lonnit, I understand your nit. tv is correct that I wanted the image to be anchored as an old book page. I think that the failure lies in the fact that I haven't carried through with the level of detail in the left margin throughout the other three sides. I should say that a good sized print has more detail in the top, bottom, and right margin than can be seen in this downsized version. Still, I'll consider beefing up the book page elements on all the margins or removing them entirely.

Again, thank you all. -Michael

Yours is one phenomenal composition, Michael. Wow.

This somehow reminds me of Marcel Duchamp's "Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even" (La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même). Although not so obscure this certainly has impressive technical control and references to mechanical (clock) parts. The composition works too and I'm not so sure I agree with Lonnit because the border serves as a transitional device relating the image to its frame and to the viewers reality as if were the binding of a book page. -tv

Hmmmm . . . a "time maker" . . . could use one of those ;)

Classic Puff - could see if in the thumbnail - the master
of composites is at it again

FANTASTIC work

Of course its a Puff! Wonderful! One nit though... I don't like the border on the left. I think it should be way softened to match the rest of the image as I find it distracting because it is the only area of the image that is not soft. The rough texture draws my eye right to it. Fantastic work, you've really got the goods, Michael. Kudos to you! ~ Lonnit
