I like what you chose. Nice bright leaf shot!

I can't see the tree for the leaf. Interesting how the brain works. Nice shot however. -tv

The smaller bright "dots" are no problem to me, but the large area of sky to the right - and to some extent the largish area right on top of the main subject - do pull my eye by their relative size and brightness. I think it would be hard to fix by simply cropping. Instead, a rather long process of extracting the three main leaves and stem, put them on a layer by themselves and then making a background from the whole image where you fill in the those two bright areas with some believable detail, using the clone tools, could possibly do the trick.

Hey Lydia,

I tend to agree with you because of the rule of thirds. We'll see what I finally set ;) thanks for your input!!

I liked it better before... sorry. That wonderful leaf doesn't seem to stand out as a shock among all of the blur as well as it did before. ~Lydia

This is Daniel. Thank you Lydia, Olaf, CJ and Penny for your input and for your critiques. After toying around with the images briefly, I decided to tone down the brightness of the lights in the background - please tell me what you think. I had gone so far, in the previous image, as to use a diffuse glow to bring them out!

Lydia, how to the splotches look now?
Penny - I live in Palo Alto, California... so I'm literally right next door.
Olaf - Thanks for the critique and suggestion!
CJ - Thanks for welcoming to the Canon CSLR challenge! I used to post at DPreview but it's been years.

I agree with Olaf on the image and on the too bright whites. You might be able to tone those down in Photoshop Daniel or a tighter crop on the top and right side might make them less distracting to the beautiful leaves. CJ

Funny... I LIKE the white blotches... makes this sort of an abstract until one views the infocus leaf. I like it all. !Lydia

Colors are wonderful and the mimicking out-of-focus leaf is a nice touch, but I find the bright blotches of sky too distracting in this composition.

How far north is this from where you live? The light looks wonderful.
