Redwood @ Night

Felton, California

I live in the redwoods and have been been trying to conceive something different... maybe it has potential?

I like this. The contrast of the reddish tree bark against the violet look of the night sky is really nice. It's a striking shot. Jim H.

Well done CaryT you have captured this from an interesting perspective.

I am also impressed by the relative cleanliness of the sky given the long exposure. The 40D/lens combo' has done very well to keep the chrominance noise down to a low level.

Nice shot. I was at the Mariposa Grove in September. I wanted to do something similar but I forgot my tripod. :( ~dtallakson

Updated the photo; pulled a bit of light out of the lower trunk. Maybe I'll try another shot for a more subtle effect... Thanks! -Cary

Wonderful tree shot Cary! I don't remember your name so if you're new to these challenges, WELCOME! Maybe with a little PP you could darken the tree a little but it's still a great shot as-is with those nice stars in the sky. :-) CJ

Thanks for the explanation, Cary...it looks almost like a day shot there is so much light on the trunk of the tree....which is not to say this is bad, but it just kind of throws your perceptions...is it night or not?

The sky says yes, night, the trunk says...no.

Interesting.

Hi, thanks. It was a 30 second exposure; I used a flashlight to highlight the tree. Lots of trial, mostly error. Not sure I'm where I want to be with it yet, but I think I like the direction. So, I did lighten it up 2/3 of a stop to bring out the sky and move the histogram to the right. Does the trunk look too bright? It's really close, so the flashlight really bounces on it... -Cary

I Like it a lot...do you have any with a slower shutter speed? Just curious what darker would look like. Best Wishes, Traveller
