Peak Design CF Tripod vs. Gitzo CF (12/27/2019)

The Peak Design will definitely be coming on my trips to the parks... so much smaller and lighter than my Gitzo (especially with the heads - RRS BH55 on the Gitzo and built-in in the PD). The 5-section Peak Design comes in at 2.6 lbs., 3.8 lbs. lighter than the 3-section Gitzo setup at 6.4 lbs. Having said that, the PD is nowhere near as stable as my Gitzo, but that is to be expected for a travel tripod compared to a full tripod setup. You will note that both sets of legs have been "augmented" by me for comfort... the Gitzo has been padded and taped, the PD taped (for easier grip). The Peak Design head works okay and will be my main mount when I need an extremely light carry option. Otherwise, I'll use their universal adapter, a super light leveler (Acratech) and clamp with an optional ball head (Markins M20). My pano gear (not shown here) mounts to the universal adapter and leveler without the need for the ball head. All total, the Peak Design setup comes in at just a bit more than half the weight and collapsed size of my full Gitzo setup... a huge savings when hiking.

My main photography site is here.
