Our first glimpse of Svalbard |
This stuffed polar bear is in the airport, and is close as you should, or probably will, get to one. |
 Road crossing sign |
 Summer dog sled? |
Eider duck on her nest in the grass |
All buildings in Longyearbyen are colorful. |
One of our zodiacs nearing a glacier |
 Edge of the glacier |
Close up of the glacier's ice; see the blue? |
Great light. Everything but the blue in the ice was black, white or some shade of grey. |
Our ship made it up to 80 degrees north! |
I think the blue ice is gorgeous. |
 More blue ice |
My camera was NOT set for black and white for this photo. |
Tiny little flowers bloom after the snow melts. |
Even the water supports growth. |
Look at how clear is this ice; it must be very old. |
More ice; it fascinates me. |
 Our ship...in the fog. |
 Our first reindeer |
 More flowers |
Resting? They spend most of their time eating. |
At last, a polar bear! |
 Napping? |
Lots and lots of guillemots |
They come to these cliffs each year to breed and raise their young. |
They look away from the sea. |
Safety in numbers, I guess. |
Birds everywhere in this area. |
 Our second polar bear |
He looked us over and left. |
A "haul out" of walrus. They feed malybe 48 hours in a row and then "haul out" onto a beach to rest...in a huddle. |
They must know we're near; we all had telephoto lens and were very quiet so as not to disturb them. |
 Curious? |
 Cutey |
Beautiful scenery every way you look. |
Piles of whale bones left from a long ago whaling station. |
 Peaceful, but curious, reindeer |
The greenest moss I've ever seen. |
What a rack this reindeer has! Both males and females have antlers to help them forage for food. |
