Delhi is an ancient city, with countless monuments dating from many different historical periods. The best known of these, such as the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, can be found in the walled city-within-a-city known as Old Delhi. This area is often impossibly crowded and is a perfect introduction to the 'organised' chaos that is India. Our hotel was situated not far away. Here in the planned city of New Delhi there are grand government buildings, wide streets and plenty of greenery, interspersed with modern market areas, and yet more ancient monuments. We were spoilt for choice when it came to places to go and things to see and opportunities to learn about bargaining, err well we never really became experts! The ultimate weapon seems to be to threaten to leave and go elsewhere (and therefore get even more cups of 'chai'!
The main sights of New Delhi we visited on the coach. We saw India Gate, a war memorial arch, the impressive Parliament Building and the Rashtrapati Bhawan, once the imperial
palace of the British viceroy and now the official residence (OK so we drove past these!) of the President of India. We visited the extravagant Birla Temple and a Sikh temple before ending our tour at Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
At the end of our second day we went by first class sleeper to Jodpur.
