The best way to explore the desert around Jaisalmer is on an overnight camel safari - camping out in the desert was an unforgettable experience, and formed a highlight of our holiday. We explored the wilderness of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert on a 3 days / 2 nights trek. You ride on the camel for approximately 3 hours in the mornings and 2 hours in the afternoons. We passed tiny villages built largely of a dung/mud mixture inhabited by nomadic and pastoral tribes, largely unaffected by modern civilisation. Sunrise and sunset were fabulous to witness in what was a fairly green desert as the rains were generous this year! Apologies for the poor quality of many of these which have a grainy appearance - I had left the ISO setting at 3200!
