Jackie - Thanks! I've considered that as a possible ID, but the photo in David Wagner's "Caterpillars of Eastern North America" looked rather different, but you're right, it's described as extremely variable. I'll caption it as Estigmene acrea.

Bev - I think this caterpillar is the Salt Marsh Estigmene acrea. Common in Essex County, Ontario. Colors can be quite variable. Thanks for ID on my plume moth Geina sheppardi. Cheers, Jackie
