Carolina grasshopper - Dissosteira carolina.

Definitely a Carolina grasshopper, then: Dissosteira carolina.

I've finally seen the wings on a few of these and they're black with a pale, yellowish band along the edge (the reverse of how I thought they were).

I did see that one fly and frequently see this species on gravel lanes, etc... From what I can see, the wings look to be a shade of yellowish-ivory with a brown band along the edge. I should probably try to catch one in a net, or look for a road-killed one to photograph.

Looks like a Carolina locust to me. Did you see it fly? What were the hindwings like?
