Dasychira caterpillar -- at rest (Perhaps D. vagans ??)

found along the Sandstone Island trail at Charleston Lake.
It was in a section of sugar maple and white birch forest.
This caterpillar is very colourful, with its various tufts of
hair and black pencils. When at rest, the pencils lie flat,
but when on the move, they are carried lifted upwards.
When agitated, this caterpillar begins to thrash around rather
violently -- quite a disturbing performance.

how can we get rid of the white hairy caterpillar with black head before it destroys are plants/trees - does this insect hurt humans in any way?
